Description: This research was an experimental study using a pig model assessing the function of a new multimodal probe for measuring cerebral blood flow and ICP.

Description: This research was an experimental study using a pig model determining a correlation between cerebral blood flow and brain tissue oxygen tension as measured by an intra-parenchymal monitor.

Title: Antegrade Cerebral Perfusion During Operations Requiring Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest in A Neonate Porcine Model: Cerebral Protection And The Impact On Other Organ Systems:
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Hlatky
Description: Cardiovascular operations involving the aortic arch involve hypothermic circulatory arrest. Little information is known regarding the effects of hypothermic circulatory arrest on cerebral function. This study uses multimodal neuromonitors and cerebral dialysis to ascertain the effects of hypothermic circulatory arrest at 18 degrees and 25 degrees Celsius with anterograde cerebral perfusion.

  • Creation and maintenance of physiological, neurological and behavioral databases.
  • Central Nervous System (CNS) examination including neurological testing of animals after focal cerebral ischemia.
  • Coordinating a Research Study.
  • Surgical procedures on rats: cathetherization of femoral vessels.
  • Cerebral blood flow measurement by laser doppler perfusion imager after cerebral ischemia and analysis of data.
  • Histological analysis of the brain after global cerebral ischemia: counting normal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 areas.
  • Histological analysis of brain after focal cerebral ischemia using computer image analysis system: measurement of infarct volume and brain edema.
