Dr. Andrey Belayev Wins 1st Prize at TANS 2012

Dr. Andrey Belayev

Dr. Andrey Belayev won the First Place Resident Paper Award at this year’s Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting held in Houston, Texas on March 1-4, 2012. The title of Dr. Belayev's presentation was "Cerebral Blood Flow Dysregulation Post Traumatic Brain Injury".

Every year the 6 Texas based residency programs give presentations at TANS. The participants of the meeting evaluate and score each of these presentations and then rank them accordingly. Two prizes are awarded at the end of each annual session and the UTHSCSA Neurosurgery Residency program has earned the 1st place award for the third consecutive year.

Congratulations to Dr. Belayev for this outstanding accomplishment!

Dr. Digicaylioglu published in Translational Stroke Research Series

Book Cover: Translational Stroke Research

Our director of Research, Dr. Murat Digicaylioglu, has been published in the Springer Series in Translational Stroke Research. The book, titled Translational Stroke Research From Target Selection to Clinical Trials is available in digital and hardcover format.

The book discusses select future targets and methods for stroke management, methods to regulate brain temperature, and the use of preconditioning in stroke. It also presents new areas of research emphasizing restoration of function with growth factors and stem cells.

Dr. Digicaylioglu's chapter, "Hematopoietic growth factor family for stroke drug development," discusses the current role of various factors in stroke, the pitfalls in experimental designs and the necessary drug development steps required to bring particular cytokines into clinical use.
